« … Truth can be obtained by us only when … by comparing a quality common to two sensations, we succeed in distilling their common essence and in reuniting them to each-other within a metaphor, liberated from the contingencies of Time … » Marcel Proust, Le Temps Retrouvé
Published to coincide with the Wallace Collections 2011 ‘Time Regained: Works by Kevin Coates’, the theme of the exhibition looks at one of Coates’s enduring preoccupations « the connection of Time with Art and Humanity, and our response to the artefacts left by others ». Inspired directly by a dozen of the treasures from the Wallace Collection, the exhibition aims to refresh our way of looking at objects and stimulates the imagination.
A distinguished Liveryman of the Goldsmiths’ Company, Coates has created a number of significant new works, combining the mysteries of the goldsmith, painter, sculptor, musician, geometer, and scholar. Using a diverse range of Wallace Collection pieces for inspiration including Gothic armour, Maiolica and paintings by Rembrandt, Canaletto and Van Loo, Coates has created entirely new works using his skills as a contemporary goldsmith.
The catalogue includes a preface written by Dame Rosalind Savill, an essay titled ‘The Golden Mean[ing]’ by Elizabeth Goring, and an artist statement by Dr. Kevin Coates. The annotated and illustrated catalogue presents 12 specific pieces and also includes the artist biography and a selected exhibitions history.
